April 20, 2011 - 9:04am

Final exams start on May 3 at Medaille College, but students have been preparing for this spring for an ultimate cram session – shattering a Guinness World Record. Members of the class of 2011 will stretch the tiny confines of the Medaille Bug, a 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle wrapped in with images of Medaille students and alumni, which is used as a moving billboard for the college.

On Wednesday, April 27, senior students will shimmy, scrunch and squeeze their way into the Medaille Bug, Western New York’s best – and only – anthropomorphic vehicle. Setup and photo opportunities with participants start at 3 p.m. on the Buffalo Campus.

With the Bug’s eager agreement, twenty-eight Medaille students – each over five feet tall, per Guinness regulations – have volunteered to “stuff” themselves inside this two-door sedan. Other rules for this type of event: no seats can be removed; all windows and doors must be closed; there is a ten-minute time limit to “stuff” the vehicle; and, the car must start on completion of the cram.

An unofficial record was set by Penn State Abington in 2001 with 27 students, and Medaille’s students are hoping up to beat that number.

The Medaille Bug will post updates to its Facebook page (www.facebook.com/medaillebug) and Twitter feed (@medaillebug) during the event.

I'm grateful for the education I've received.

The instructors were knowledgeable and welcomed class discussions, with
respect for each student's contribution. I've learned how to be a more
effective leader. My capstone class gave insight on how to combine all
the education learned to operate a business. That's when I realized how
much I had sharpened my knowledge.
