In recent months, Medaille has expanded offerings in its Department of Graduate Counseling and Psychology to reflect the changing needs of professionals who work in the fields of mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, and psychology.

According to the most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report, the outlook for occupations in psychology is expected show growth, particularly for students who have earned a graduate degree. Advanced training in a psychology-related field can lead to a rewarding career as demand from child and family service agencies, mental health clinics and social service providers grows.

Areas include:

Marriage and Family Therapy

Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy: As the first and only program in the Buffalo/Niagara region, students who are looking to specialize in marriage and family therapy can complete this 48-credit hour program in about two and a half years. The program includes a 500-hour internship with a local agency that works with families, children or couples, and approaches the issues facing those populations from a systems perspective.

Certificate of Advanced Study in Marriage and Family: Designed for professionals who already have earned a graduate degree, this 27-credit option with a 500-hour practicum meets the New York State educational requirements for licensure as a marriage and family therapist.

Mental Health Counseling

Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling: In this cutting edge program, students who have the passion to perform individual therapy can complete this 60-credit hour program in about two and a half years. The program includes a 600-hour internship with a local agency that works with individuals with mild, moderate or severe mental health issues (including but not limited to, inpatient, outpatient, substance, court mandated, community, individual and family counseling). Faculty work in the field as clinicians, giving a hands-on education of learning theory and applications to real life.

Certificate of Advanced Study in Mental Health Counseling: A change in New York State licensure regulations means that some counselors will need to take an additional course of study to be eligible to sit for NYS licensure. As an 18-credit hour online program, this option for students who have a master’s degree in a related field (rehabilitation counseling, school counseling, counselor education) satisfies New York State educational requirements to sit for the State licensure exam in mental health counseling.

Master of Arts in Psychology: By taking one year of evening courses, you can fit a master’s degree into your busy schedule and apply what you’ve learned to careers in business, education, research or government.

Doctorate, Clinical Psychology (PsyD)
: Medaille’s first doctoral program prepares students for careers as licensed professional psychologists. The program follows the practitioner-scholar model of the National Council of Schools and Programs in Professional Psychology, and meets the requirements for licensure in New York, and is held at the Amherst Campus.

I'm grateful for the education I've received.

The instructors were knowledgeable and welcomed class discussions, with
respect for each student's contribution. I've learned how to be a more
effective leader. My capstone class gave insight on how to combine all
the education learned to operate a business. That's when I realized how
much I had sharpened my knowledge.
